A 10 years autopsy-based investigation of maternal mortality in Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Lagos, Nigeria, have identified bleeding after delivery (Postpartum Hemorrhage) as the major cause of maternal death in the hospital. These deaths could have been prevented with proper emergency obstetric response such as availability of adequate blood and effective referral system in the hospital, experts suggest.

Lack of proper adoption of family planning methods among Nigerians leads to 610,000 abortions annually in Nigeria says jhpiego.

 

Addressing pressmen in Abuja on October 20, 2016, Emmanuel Otolorin, the country director of Jhpiego, an international non-profit health organization affiliated to Johns Hopkins University stated that 36 million abortions occur worldwide annually. And Nigeria accounts for 610,000 of the act.

A non–governmental organisation, Pathfinder International Nigeria, yesterday urged Nigerians to desist from patronising quacks in accessing family planning commodities. The organisation’s Project Officer, Dr. Adenike Jagun and the Family Planning Coordinator in the Ministry of Health in Ogun State, Mrs. Elizabeth Ikeobi gave the warning at a sensitisation seminar for media organisations in Abeokuta.

 

Nigeria approves N4 billion to fight malnutrition in northeast

The Minister of Health, Isaac Adewole, says the federal government has approved N4 billion to provide health and tackle malnutrition in parts of northeast Nigeria.

 

Hundreds have died in the past months from severe malnutrition in the Internally Displaced Persons’ camps.

 

Speaking in Maiduguri, Borno State, on Thursday, the minister said the approved funds would be specifically spent on health and nutrition matters in the troubled region.

 

Amosun’s wife donates centres to fight cancer

Determined to wage war against the dreaded cancer disease, the wife of the Governor of Ogun State and President of UPLIFT Development Foundation, Mrs. Olufunso Amosun, has donated three ultra-modern cancer screening centres in Abeokuta, Sagamu and Ota respectively.

 

The centres, located at the State Hospital, Ijaye in Abeokuta; Onabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital in Sagamu; and State Hospital in Ota, according to the first lady, are strategically situated for the use of the residents of Ogun state in its three senatorial districts of the state.

 

Family Planning: About 40,000 women, 241,000 new-born die annually in Nigeria - Expert

A professor of obstetrics and gynaecology, and Country Director, JHpiego Corporation, Prof Emmanuel Otolorin has raised an alarm that about 40,000 women and  241,000 new-born die in Nigeria annually from pregnancy and other related complications.

 

Speaking at the weekend during a Family Planning Media Roundtable in Abuja, he said lack of family planning accounted for 610,000 abortions, a rate of 25 abortions per 1000 women aged 15 – 44.

Mrs Olanike Adebayo of Pipeline Area, Ilorin never knew that her joy over her child Olamide, a six-month-old baby would be short-lived moments after he was diagnosed lately of jaundice as Olamide later died of complications arising from the ailment.

Kwara records 300 maternal child mortality – Emir

Dr Haliru Ndanusa, the Emir of Shonga in Edu Local Government Area of Kwara, on Tuesday said that more than 300 women die weekly due to maternal/child mortality related issues.

 

Ndanusa gave the figure at the palace of the Emir of llorin while speaking at a sensitisation/advocacy programme for women in Kwara.

 

The advocacy programme was at the instance of the Sultanate Foundation for Peace and Development in conjunction with the UNDP/WHO.
