PROFILE: The life and times of Babatunde Osotimehin

Babatunde Osotimehin was a global leader of public health, women’s empowerment and young people, particularly focused on promoting human rights, including sexual and reproductive health and rights, as well as population and development.
 
After his appointment as UNFPA Executive Director, effective 2011, he spearheaded efforts by the international community to advance the milestone consensus of the International Conference on Population and Development, held in Cairo in 1994.

Osotimehin, former minister of health, is dead

Babatunde Osotimehin, Nigeria’s minister of health from December 2008 to March 2010, is dead.
 
Up until his death, the 68-year-old was the executive director of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).
 
According to sources at the UNFPA, his death was announced at the Nigerian office of the UN body on Monday morning.
 
He was said to have died in New York.

UNFPA recognises Nigeria, Gambia banning female genital mutilation

The UN Fund for Population Activities, UNFPA, says Nigeria and The Gambia are among the countries that have outlawed the harmful practice of female genital mutilation.
 
The UNFPA, in a report on the of 2017 International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation, commemorated on February 6, stressed the urgent need to abandon the practice.

UN Campaign to Save Nigerian Children from Measles, Polio

At a time when reports showed that many children were malnourished, susceptible to different diseases and have died in their numbers in the North-east ravaged by Boko Haram which resulted to spent healthcare services, the United Nations (UN) on January 13, 2017, took up a massive campaign to protect as many as 4.7 million children from measles in the area.

VVF: Kano Govt. Advocates Improved Health Care For Girl Child

In addition to improving health care facilities especially in rural areas, the Kano state government has revealed plans to eradicate the menace of VesicoVaginal Fistula (VVF).
 
The Governor, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, expressed worry over the increase in number of reported VVF cases in the state.
