58,000 women dying every year is "social injustice", says Ladipo

President of the Association for Reproductive and Family Health, Professor Oladapo Ladipo says the number of women dying from pregnancy and childbirth complications every year in Nigeria is "one of the greatest injustices of our time."
 
"It is shameful that Nigeria still contributes significantly to global maternal death figure. We estimate that we are losing about 58,000 mothers annually, through pregnancy, childbirth and post-partum complications," Ladipo said.
 

Husbands attitude threatens pregnant wives more – Exec. Chairman

The attitude of some husbands in Bauchi state constituted a threat to the well-being of their pregnant wives more than other challenges,  the Executive Chairman, Bauchi State Primary Healthcare Development Agency (BSPHCDA), Mr Adamu Gamawa said on Tuesday.
 
Briefing newsmen in Bauchi on the Maternal Newborn and Child Health Week (MNCHW), Gamawa said such husbands had prevented their pregnant wives from attending antenatal clinics (ANC).

UNFPA Raises Concerns About Early Marriage, Adolescent Pregnancy

The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has identified early marriage and adolescent pregnancy as some of the socio-economic factors responsible for high rate of maternal and child mortality in Nigeria and other developing African countries.
 
The UNFPA Executive Director, Professor Babatunde Osetimehin, disclosed this during an advocacy visit to Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai.

Pregnant with her fourth child in a clinic in Benin, Rosine is relieved to learn that she does not have AIDS, after a free test considered a national health priority.

 

 

"I was afraid the test would be positive. My husband is a driver, you know," the woman in her 40s told AFP at the maternity clinic in the small town of Bohicon, where she was screened.

 

 

Ogun trains 2 000 birth attendants on pregnancy complications

The Ogun Government has trained 2,000 Traditional Birth Attendants on pregnancy complications during child birth.

 

 

The State Commissioner for Health, Dr Babatunde Ipaye, said this during an interactive session with newsmen on Saturday in Abeokuta.

 

 

He said the training had become imperative in order to reduce the morbidity and mortality rate of mothers and children during child bearing.

MRS Toyin Saraki, the wife of Senate President, on Thursday appealed to families to space pregnancies for 1000 days for better life, prosperity and good health of the family.

 

 

Toyin Saraki made the appeal at the 2016 Women Pre-Conference meeting of the 4th National Planning Conference scheduled for Nov. 7 and Nov. 9 in Abuja.

 

 

The pre-conference had the theme `Women and Family Planning in Nigeria: A critical Requirement for Harnessing Demographic Dividend for Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals”.

 

 

40,000 Nigerian women die yearly during childbirth – report

A report presented yesterday, in Abuja, by Chairman of the Association for the Advancement of Family Planning (AAFP) and Chairman of the Local Organising Committee (LOC) of the conference, Dr. Ejike Oji said about 40,000 women die every year from childbirth related complications.
 
The report is against the backdrop of preparations for the Fourth Family Planning Conference to be held in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
 
The report also indicated that the country’s maternal mortality ratio has hit 576 deaths out of every 100,000 live births daily.

Inadequate nutritional intake during and after pregnancy can lead to adverse health consequences later in life, the National President, Nutrition Society of Nigeria, Dr Bartholomew Brai, have said.

 

 

Speaking during a Media Workshop organised by Nestle Nigeria plc. in Agbara, Ogun, recently, Dr. Brai, advises all nursing mothers to eat balanced and varied diet with the right amounts of vitamins and minerals.

About 40,000 women and 241,000 newborns die in the country annually from pregnancy and other related complications.
Lack of family planning was also said to have accounted for 610,000 abortions, a rate of 25 abortions per 1000 women aged 15 – 44.
A professor of obstetrics and gnaecology, and Country Director, JHpiego Corporation, Prof Emmanuel Otolorin, made the disclosure at the weekend during at a Family Planning Media Roundtable in Abuja.
