The World Contraception Day was marked on September 26 to celebrate the importance of contraception.
Emphasising sexual and reproductive health has always been a cornerstone of the celebration of the Day with family planning being the crux.
In Nigeria, an NGO, Partnership for Advocacy in Child and Family Health @ Scale, held a press conference to mark the day and make a case for modern contraception as necessary to achieve the nation’s goals in maternal, neonatal and child health.

World Contraception Day: Experts Call For Increased Awareness To Curb Unsafe Abortion

As Nigeria joins the rest of the world to observe the World Contraception Day, experts have called for urgent action on unwanted and underage pregnancies to check the rising rate of unsafe abortion in the country.
They gave the warning in a statement jointly issued on Wednesday.
The Programme Director of Development Communications Network (Devcoms), Akin Jimoh, noted that the majority of young people in Nigeria are not empowered with quality information to make informed decisions about their reproductive health.

‘Only 2.1 per cent of married women use contraceptives in Bauchi’

Only 2.1 per cent of married women in Bauchi State are using a modern method of contraceptive, which is lower than the national rate of 10 per cent.

This was disclosed yesterday by the Country Director of Health Policy Plus, with funding from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), Mr. Onoriode Ezire, who noted that because of the low practice of contraceptive in the state, the population of Bauchi is likely to reach 26 million by 2050 as against the present population of about five million.
