Group takes campaign against maternal, child mortality to communities

To deepen the impact of its campaign on maternal and child mortality, Rotary International District 9110, has taken the initiative to communities in Lagos.
Speaking at a one-day Community Dialogue on Maternal and Perinatal Morbidity and mortality reduction organised for stakeholders and residents in Lagos Island, Lagos Coordinator of the programme, Dr. Deinde Shoga said the initiative was to ensure safe pregnancy and delivery, the survival of children and to address issues of family planning.

When you hear of #TakwaBay what comes to mind is beautiful ocean, beach, boat rides but the reality is different when we got to the community. According to Baale of #TakwaBayover 250,000 people lives in this community, men, women and children. But #Takwabaycommunity does not have a nepa/phcn Poll not to talk of having electricity since they started leaving there thousands of years ago. This simply means all the benefits of electricity has never been enjoyed in this community. Women deliver their babies in darkness.

The discussion was centred on saving women’s lives in Nigeria.  The hangout started around 10 am in the morning with opening prayer from Miss Becky. The Lagos State Government has reiterated its resolve to continue with the implementation of activities and strategies geared towards the reduction of maternal and child deaths in the State through its Maternal and Child Mortality Reduction Programme, the Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Primary Health Care, Dr. Olufemi Onanuga has said.

The Director of Medical services, Lagos State Primary Healthcare Board (LSPHCB), Dr Sanni Fausat Oluyombo has said 248 wards out of the 376 wards in Lagos have functional Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs).

 

She made this known at the 9th quarterly civil society media forum on strengthening the health systems in Nigeria through Strengthening Health System in Nigeria through PHC Under One Roof: Progress, Challenges and Way Forward (PHCUOR) organised by Development Communication Network (DevComs).
