Dr. Uchenna Emelonye is the Country Representative of the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in Liberia, having previously served in the same capacity in Uganda. Emelonye is also visiting professor of Human Rights law at several European universities. In this interview with ROBERT EGBE, he speaks on the underreported but critical issue of maternal and child mortality in Nigeria.

Rather, pregnant women are urged to attend antenatal care in primary healthcare and other recognised hospitals, as this would help to reduce cases of prolonged obstructed labours, which are the major cause of obstetric fistula.

Health Minister, Prof. Isaac Adewole, on Monday, remarked that the country’s mortality in children Under-Five “is still very unacceptable’’.
 
In his remarks at the advocacy meeting on reproductive health in Abuja, organised by the office of the wife of the President, the minister stressed the urgency for the government to invest in health as it did in other infrastructure.
 
He said the administration was focusing attention on the basic health care system and intended to achieve eight million person target in three years.
