Lagos, Dec. 23, 2015 (NAN) Indigenes of the Kobena Sea Beach Village, Illashe in Lagos, have called for the establishment of a health facility in their community, to help to stem the incidences of maternal and child mortality.

Residents of Shishipe community, a settlement in Mpape, Bwari Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have appealed to government to provide health facilities and other basic amenities in their community.

UNICEF representative in Nigeria Ms. Jim Bolken told federal legislators last week that five women die hourly at childbirth in the country. This sad news only confirmed what has been an abiding part of health care in the country. At present, a woman’s chance of dying at childbirth is 1 in 13.
The World Health Organisation’s (WHO) 2014 report has stated that the maternal mortality rate in Nigeria is 560 deaths per 100,000 live births and one-third of all global maternal deaths are concentrated in two populous countries which includes Nigeria, after India.
